  1. My husband & I got married in April and as a wedding gift from his brother, we were given a three-night stay at Humble Bee in Okehampton, Devon. I had it on my wish list of places to visit and it was such a lovely, thoughtful present for us as I'm a huge bee lover (if you couldn't already tell from the shop), and we love visiting places around the UK.

We drove down on Boxing Day and stayed in Taunton for one night, before heading down to Devon on the 27th December, making a detour to Topsham first, followed by Exeter and then across to Okehampton, which sits at the top of the Dartmoor National Park.

We arrived a little early but the owner Yvette was very accommodating and showed us round, letting us know all the essentials before leaving us to enjoy the surroundings and the unique accommodation we were staying in.

Humble Bee consists of three floors, with a double bed on the top floor, snug and toilet on the middle floor and the kitchen & shower on the bottom floor - with a sliding door leading to the outdoor bath. There are two other places to stay on-site at Honeyside Down – the Bird Box and a Yurt – both of which have access to the outdoor hot tub up on the terrace between all three. We didn’t go in the hot tub though, as our private outdoor bath was amazing – and I am not usually a bath person! It did take a while to fill up however it was really hot water and it was lovely to lay in, surrounded by nature.

There are hints of bees all around Humble Bee – from the bee stencils on the stairs to the honeycomb effect above the fire, even down to the Neal’s Yard Bee Lovely Hand Wash in the toilet – one of my favourite organic brands! The whole place is so snug & cosy, I spent a lot of time reading in the snug on the middle floor and we played lots of card games too, as there’s no TV. Luckily for me, there is phone signal and I managed to get 3G/4G too so it’s not completely off-the-grid, if you are a bit of a social media addict like myself, you’ll still be able to log on!

The kitchen is fairly well equipped and had a cooker, microwave, toaster and kettle along with lots of cutlery and kitchenware so we were able to cook a full meal on the first night, but we had quite big lunches on the other two days so just had snacks for dinner on those nights. There are two heaters (a fire heater in the snug and an electric heater in the kitchen) and also the bed has an electric blanket so it stayed warmed throughout the evenings and into the morning, when we were woken by the sunlight coming through the roof window and the birds chirping away.

There are lots of quirky but sustainable features inside too, from the whole structure being made from wood to old symbols being used as lightshades above the stairs. There are also lots of bunches of faux flowers dotted around which adds a pretty touch.

Honeyside Down close to Okehampton Castle and it’s also right around the corner from the old Okehampton Railway Station which has the Railway Café – a lovely stop for breakfast one morning. We also drove down to the Eden Project for a full day out and then we drove round the Dartmoor National Park on a bit of a rainy day, stopping in Tavistock, Two Bridges and Chagford on the way round – some lovely small, independent shops to visit!

We had such a lovely stay at Humble Bee and I would definitely recommend a visit. It's small but so cosy and lovely to get away from real life for a few days!
